About Us

Association pour l'Aide aux Populations du Kivu,
in short AAPK, is a Belgian nonprofit association (enterprise
nr BE 0409.989.702), with development NGO status under Belgian law.
AAPK is active in the Kivu region since 1967.
The goal of AAPK is to contribute directly or through
funding to the integrated and sustainable development of the
geographical region of Walungu in South-Kivu, based on a global
policy of health care and well-being, and in alignment with the
Millenium Development Goals.
Walungu is about 45 km South West from Bukavu, in the region of the Great Lakes,
Province of South-Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Health Care Zone of Walungu
The
health care zone of Walungu is part of the central sanitary district of South-Kivu
(Ministry of Health, D.R. of Congo). This
sanitary district covers
an estimated population of 685,000 . The Walungu zone
is the largest health care zone of
this district, with about 200,000
inhabitants. It includes the FSKi Hospital,
the general reference hospital
of the district.
This is a general hospital
with a 300 bed-capacity, 17 health care
centers
and a
nursing school.
