At the Hospital of Walungu, a woman, thin despite her pregnancy,
is waiting to give birth to her child. Will she be able to feed her
baby? This same problem of food security faces all the patients in the hospital.
Having regular food intake is an important condition of health. This
is why our NGO has recently begun to finance micro-projects in the
field of agriculture in the region of Walungu.
The inauguration of a new manioc mill took
place recently. This is a first result of our pilot project.
It is midday and the sun is at its zenith. In the small village
of Irongo, which is at three hours walking distance from Walungu,
people are celebrating. After three months of intense work, the mill
is up and running, efficient and accessible to all. This manioc
mill is unique in Irongo and its neighbouring territory. It will
save the women of the village many tiring hours of manual work and
long walking trips to Walungu
.

After the inauguration of the mill and its baptism (with beer!)
by Nicole le Bussy, an active member of AAPK who stayed three
months in Walungu, comes a demonstration of the mill. Everyone
admires the rapidity and effectiveness with which the work can be
done, a sharp contrast to the time consuming and labour intensive
work done previously. Afterwards, there are several speeches.
Déogratis Murhega, chairman of the Groupe Engagé pour la Promotion
Rurale (Group Committed to Rural
Promotion), our local partner, presents the projects and its
accomplishments and thanks AAPK for its precious support in the
initial phases of the project.
He then encourages the local population to take great care of the
new mill, which is vital to this rural community. He delivers a
message of hope: through the implementation of this mill project,
the village of Irongo is moving towards sustainable development of
their community. Then follow several speeches from the official
representatives of the members of the Group Committed to Rural
Promotion, the main actors, and a representative of the Irongo
Association. Finally, words of thanks and encouragement from Nicole.
And now comes the celebration! Women are wearing their most
beautiful clothes; happiness can be seen on every face. The joy of
this small village can be seen in the dancing, singing and handing
over of presents to those who have invested so fully in the project.
The celebration ends with a meal shared by all.
This inauguration is the result of six months of preparation and
fieldwork. For our NGO, it is also the beginning of a first
agricultural project. The Group Committed to Rural Promotion would
like to build a canteen, which could provide meals for all members
of the village and the nearby school. We hope that this pilot
project will be followed by other agricultural plans in the region
around the hospital of Walungu.
All these encouraging results for the local population would not
exist without your support! Our warm thanks for your generosity.
